Sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) have nourished civilizations for thousands of years. Originating in Central and South America, evidence suggests that Indigenous peoples cultivated them as early as 2500 BCE. These resilient tubers traveled far—ancient Polynesians may have carried them across the Pacific, long before European explorers encountered them.


The Quechua people of the Andes honored sweet potatoes for their life-sustaining properties, incorporating them into both daily meals and sacred rituals. Across the Atlantic, enslaved Africans brought their knowledge of root crops, further cementing the sweet potato’s importance in the Americas. Today, sweet potatoes thrive worldwide, celebrated for their adaptability and nutritional richness.

Some West African traditions consider yams and sweet potatoes sacred, offerings for ancestors and deities alike.

In many Indigenous cultures of the Americas, sweet potatoes were regarded as a gift from the earth, seen as a sacred food that provided sustenance during times of scarcity as they store well for long periods. 


Some legends speak of the sweet potato as a symbol of resilience, thriving even in tough soil and harsh conditions, much like the people who rely on it. In other traditions, sweet potatoes have been woven into creation stories, believed to possess healing powers or bring prosperity and good fortune. Across cultures, they are celebrated not just for their nutritional value, but for their deep spiritual significance.

Propagation & Planting

Sweet potatoes grow from slips—young shoots sprouted from mature tubers. To start slips, place a sweet potato half-submerged in water or moist soil, and within weeks, vines will emerge. These slips can be planted directly into warm, well-drained soil.


Mound & Trellis Method

Plant sweet potato slips in mounded rows to improve drainage and encourage root formation. Vining varieties benefit from trellises, keeping foliage elevated and reducing pest exposure.


Container Growing

For small spaces, deep containers (at least 15 gallons) work well. Choose compact varieties and ensure proper drainage.



Culinary Tradition

Sweet potatoes have a rich culinary tradition, particularly in the Americas, where they are cherished for their versatility and nutritional value. The tuber is often baked, mashed, or roasted, making it a staple in dishes ranging from savory to sweet. However, it's not just the root that’s prized.


The leaves of the sweet potato’s vine are also edible and can be sautéed like other leafy greens such as spinach or collards. When sautéing sweet potato leaves, simply cook them with garlic, onions, and a bit of olive oil, allowing the mild, earthy flavor to shine. In various cultures, these leaves are used in stews, soups, and stir-fries, contributing both texture and a rich, leafy taste.

Recipe: Roasted Sweet Potato with Chili & Lime

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, cubed

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • ½ tsp chili powder

  • ½ tsp smoked paprika

  • ½ tsp cilantro (optional)

  • Juice of 1 lime

  • Salt & pepper to taste


Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Toss sweet potatoes with oil, chili powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.

  3. Spread on a baking sheet and roast for 25–30 minutes, until tender.

  4. Drizzle with lime juice before serving.
